Learning Development
Learning development in science subject refers to the continuous process of building students’ knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes related to scientific understanding. It is not just about memorising facts but about how learners grow in their ability to think scientifically, apply concepts, and solve problems.
By the end of the lesson, students are able to :
- Listing the members of the Solar System
- Deducing the temperature of planets based on their sequence in the Solar System
- Describing movement of planets
Desired Learning
- I will learn the members of the Solar System
- I will learn the temperatures of planets based on their sequence in the Solar System
- I will learn movement of planets
Success Criteria
- I can list the members of the Solar System
- I can deduce the temperatures of planets based on their sequence in the Solar System
- I can describe movement of planets
Unpacking the Curriculum
Unpacking the curriculum refers to the process of interpreting or translating the intended curriculum into clear and specific learning objectives and instructional plans that can be applied in the classroom. It involves breaking down broad curriculum goals, standards, or competencies into detailed, manageable parts that guide teaching and learning activities effectively.
This process ensures that educators understand what students are expected to learn and be able to do at various stages, making the curriculum practical and actionable for daily instruction (Cahapay, 2020). Unpacking helps teachers connect the curriculum content with appropriate teaching strategies and assessment methods for better student learning outcomes.

A Year 3 Solar System Lesson 🪐
Stage 1: Desired Results
Big Idea:
The Solar System is an organized system where distance from the Sun affects temperature and movement.
Essential Questions:
- Why are planets in a particular order?
- How does distance affect temperature?
- Why do planets orbit the Sun?
Students Can...
- Name all planets in order.
- Explain temperature vs. distance.
- Demonstrate orbits with a model.
Stage 2: Acceptable Evidence
Performance Tasks:
- Build a 3D Solar System model.
- Conduct a heat lamp experiment.
- Role-play planet orbits.
Other Assessments:
- Quizzes on planet order.
- Graphing planet temperatures.
- Reflection: "What if Earth moved?"
Stage 3: Learning Plan
Hook (Engagement):
- Show a captivating NASA video.
- Ask: "Why is Earth 'just right'?"
Activities:
- Mnemonic songs for planet order.
- Heat lamp experiment.
- Model orbits with student role-play.
Closure:
- Students present their 3D models.
- Reflect on Earth's suitability for life.
